Linking Participatory Plant Breeding to the Seed Supply System

The purpose of this paper is to examine the technical, regulatory, and policy aspects of how participatory breeding approaches relate to both the  formal and informal sectors. There is a large disconnect between the research centres modern plant breeding and normal farming conditions which results in the risk of selecting releasing a variety that is inappropriate for the farmers’ needs.  Participatory plant breeding (PPB) approaches bring the selection process closer to the farmer in regards to the environment, knowledge, and information.  Participatory approaches has helped shorten the breeding cycle and increased diversity at the farmer level.
