Quality Declared Seed System

The following details the decisions made by the FAO on Quality Declared Seed. The Expert Consultation Meeting on the Revision of the Quality Declared Seeds was held at FAO, Rome, from 5 to 7 May 2003.The objective was to review the Quality Declared Seed, FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper 117, which was first published in 1993. The items considered was a need for a selective reveiw of seed standards of some of the crops, broadening the QDS to tropical crops, suggest how QDS could be used for quality control of crops under PVB (particpatory varietal breeding), improve QDS to account for UPOV and TRIPS agreement, possible inclusions of GMO, and determination of critical seed quality attributes as a bottom line for local seed trade.
