ISSD Africa Photo Competition

As part of the ISSD Africa Synthesis Conference (Nairobi, September 2016), conference participants were invited to submit their favourite photograph related to their "Seed Story". 

3 winners were picked, each receiving some 'sweet Dutch delights', with the overall winner also receiving a photo book, "Seeing Seeds",

The conference organisers would again like to thank the entrants for their contributions to what was a very enjoyable moment during the conference!

ISSD Africa National Activity Posters

During the ISSD Africa Synthesis Conference in Nairobi, September 2016, ISSD Africa Country Focal Points (CFPs) presented the activities completed in each of their ten countries over the two years of the piloting phase. 

Zimbabwe: PVP and Seed Laws National Workshop

A national workshop was held from the 20th to the 21st of October 2015 at the Bronte Hotel in Zimbabwe. 50 key stakeholders attended and contributed to the even.

ISSD Africa National Seminar, Ethiopia

The Ethiopian National Seminar is one of ten national seminars organised to discuss findings from 2 years of ISSD Africa action research, as well as identify future areas of focus on a national and continental level. The seminar took place on March 26th, 2016 at the Beshale Hotel, Addis Ababa.

ISSD Africa National Seminar, Uganda

The ISSD Africa Uganda National Seminar was held in Kampala on the 23rd of March, 2016. The seminar brought together key stakeholders from the Ugandan seed industry. The seminar was organised by Bioversity International.

ISSD Africa: Mali National Seminar

The national seminar of Mali, commissioned by ISSD Africa has been organized in Bamako, on March 2, 2016 at the Mandé Hotel.  Twenty-eight participants representing seed producers, seed companies, breeders, farmer organizations and donors attended the workshop.

ISSD Africa National Seminar, Kenya

The seed sector in Kenya is often faced with the challenge off fake seeds. Smallholder farmers in Kenya cannot access quality seed of superior varieties hence low agricultural productivity. A well-functioning seed sector should therefore exploit all seed systems. These remarks were made by Dr Mary Mathenge the Director of Tegemeo Institute at the ISSD Africa Kenya National Seminar held on 24th March, 2016 at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

ISSD Africa: Burundi National Seminar

The National Seminar was organized in Bujumbura on March 1st, 2016 by the Burundi National Seed Committee. The seminar was opened by Mr Alexis Ntamavukiro, IFDC Country Representative. Thirty five participants representing public and private stakeholders in the seed sector as well as representatives of donor organizations attended the seminar. 

ISSD Africa National Seminar, Zambia

At the ISSDAfrica National Seminar held on 9th February 2016 in Lusaka bringing together more than 40 seed industry stakeholders, a number of key challenges to seed delivery in Zambia were deliberated. Addressing the participants, Ms. Mable Simwanza, the Director of SCCI, observed that even though Zambia is a net seed exporter, producing 80,000 MT of seed annually, it still faced key challenges in the access to legume seeds and varieties, adding that most seed is “recycled”.  

Tanzania ISSD Africa National Seminar

Access to improved quality seeds by smallholder farmers has a great bearing on the efficiency of other inputs such as fertilizer, agro-chemicals, irrigation, and labor. Addressing an ISSDAfrica National Seminar in Dar es Salaam on February 10th 2016, Mr. Canuth Komba, who made the opening remarks on behalf of the Assistant Director of Agricultural Inputs in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, noted the importance of the seed sector, emphasizing that availability of quality seed is a top priority for Tanzania’s agricultural sector, the region and development partners as a whole.
